Editorial standards & policies

Credibility is earned through consistent standards, transparent practice and accountability. These principles apply to every format: print, digital, research and video.

Editorial principles

  • Accuracy before speed

Names, dates, figures, quotations and material claims are checked against credible sources before publication.

  • Verification and attribution

Sources are identified, prioritising official documents, statements, primary records and credible research.

  • Context before sensationalism

No exaggerated headlines, unsupported claims or language designed to mislead or alarm.

  • Independent editorial judgement

Decisions follow newsworthiness, evidence and public interest; commercial relationships do not decide conclusions.

  • Fact separate from opinion

News, analysis, commentary and sponsored material are labelled as such.

  • Fairness

Relevant facts are represented fairly, disputed claims attributed, and a right of response offered for material allegations.

  • Transparency and corrections

Material errors are reviewed and corrected, with an explanation of what changed.

  • Respect for operational sensitivity

No unverified operational claims or information that could create avoidable risk.

Five-level verification

Every monograph, brief and assessment passes all five levels before release. Research rests on open-source, public-domain evidence.

  1. Level 1 · Source

Claims are traced to primary official records: Ministry of Defence releases, parliamentary records, treaty texts or on-the-record field observation.

  2. Level 2 · Cross-check

Figures, dates and designations are confirmed against at least two independent documentary sources.

  3. Level 3 · Context

Facts are placed in their budgetary, doctrinal and historical context.

  4. Level 4 · Editorial review

Senior editors and subject experts review method, technical content and neutrality.

  5. Level 5 · Publication clearance

A final accuracy and attribution audit, plus legal and national-security sensitivity review.

Sensitive defence reporting

National Security First: journalism and strategic research with responsibility. Defence Observer never publishes:

  • Information that could compromise ongoing or planned operations
  • Classified documents or restricted military data
  • Real-time or unannounced troop movements and tactical logistics
  • Exact deployment locations, coordinates or installation layouts
  • Technical or infrastructure vulnerabilities that could help hostile actors
  • Personal or non-public contact details of serving personnel

Work touching frontier deployments, weapon specifications or active operations is cleared by senior editors and legal review at Level 5.

Corrections

Minor typographical errors are corrected promptly without changing meaning. Substantive factual corrections carry a timestamped Correction Notice explaining what changed and why.
